How to Sample: Patrick Alavi

As the world of sample-hunting and sampling in general is one I love to live in, I present to an example of some good-ass micro-sampling by our friend Patrick Alavi.
Look at that sexy sampleur.

Our story starts in 1975, with the track "It Only Takes A Minute" by Tavares.

Chop the intro up... (there's a small sample I couldn't get quite right but you get the idea)

Add a crazy shit-ton of filters and you get...

SPARTACUS!

Now that, my friends, is how you sample.

For those interested in Patrick Alavi, his Club Sport EP is available for download thanks to our friends at Solid Goldberger.

It only takes a minute (to find a great sample)...

Kickin' It Old School.... House, That Is Vol. 1

Time for some old-school house, y'all. No questions asked, all ripped from my personal collection at glorious 320 kbps. :D

Our theme today is chill-out tracks. Let's begin, shall we?

Most of you may know of Romanthony from his collaboration with Daft Punk ('Too Long', of course!). For those of you who don't know (and you should!) Romanthony is also a prolific house producer in his own right. A lot of his stuff is hard to find; I was lucky to score this for $5 in an East Village record shop. From 1998's "Romanthony EP", "Together" is a glorious laid-back anthem of house. It's simple and lovely, and Eve Angel's smooth vocals round out the track nicely. I want to drive around Hollywood at night with this track blasting from my Rolls Royce, you know?

Now that we've achieved mellow, let's keep it going...

Bob Sinclar may have copped the vocal for 1998's "Vision of Paradise", but the original by Island Noyze Productions is supreme in my mind. The hypnotic vocals combined with the tranquil bass and rhythm guitar bring you to an island kingdom where half-naked men in loincloths serve you grapes and fan you with palm leaves, all while dancing erotically in a circle to a conga beat.

...Oh, and the discreet-as-hell Bob James sample is pretty cool too.

From the super secret vault of house goodness that is my bedroom...

The Most Honomable

Honom (real name Sebastian Uzieblo) is an up-and-coming electro producer on the MySpace circuit. Honom's music is relatively unknown, a fact that is bothering me quite a bit. A Club-a-Clubber, his tracks have been featured on a few comps so far and, quite frankly, they hold some of the most funky and creative electro out there. But don't take my word for it:

The driving factory-esque beats combined with the subtly integrated Whispers sample and chiptune sound effects makes "Thursday's Icecream" a medley of sheer awesome. The Christmas bell sound effect is a little out of place, but the funky chopped melody more than makes up for it. Overall rating: 8/10

This track, aptly titled "Planet Booty Funk (Ah Yeah!)" is a sleek and sexy electro tune with a synth arpeggio to make babies to. If this track does not make you want to dive under the sheets and get busy, nothing will. The only thing that could *maybe* improve this track would be an Isaac Hayes acapella, in which case the pure sexyness would overload your speakers to the point of explosion. The ending leaves a little to be desired, but otherwise this track is a solid 9/10.

Last is, while probably the most cheesy of the three tracks, undoubtedly my personal favorite. "Da Bii Ta Bota Botii" combines the sexyness of Planet Booty Funk with the no-holds-barred electro funk of Thursday's Icecream. Add to that an acidic synth pad, an unbelievably dirty bassline, and even more of those chiptune sound effects and you get an orgy of electro goodness. The vocals are kitschy ("This beat is full of funky/You make me high on music") but they are a good finisher to an otherwise rockin' track. The heavy metal guitar only serves to bolster this as well. A definite 9, if not 9.5 or even 10/10.

Overall Honom is a perfect, eclectic and effin' sexy blend of house and electro and deserves more attention than he gets. All of these tracks are available on Club-a-Club and Galaxie Comete compilations (Wrath of Zeus, Cool Edition, and I Believe in Me II respectively). You can also hear his MySpace, which has some more dirty electro tracks you're sure to love, including an electro remix of Technologic.

Au revoir,

-Chris
